'Majority' of girls want to wear a princess dress 18th Jun 2008
The age that little girls want to wear a princess dress is "an important and wonderful phase", it has been claimed.
Reported by Finand newspaper, the Helsingin Sanomat, the majority of children want to put on princess fancy dress outfits between the ages of four and six.
"It is a question of identification: being a princess is a game that is part of girlhood and future womanhood," explained university lecturer Marjatta Kalliala. "It is wonderful to identify with something that is beautiful and pure."
Child psychiatry professor Dr Tuula Tamminen told the newspaper that parents should not stop their daughters from wearing princess fancy dress or re-enacting a fantasy world.
She said that people should not downplay gender differences and that little girls should be free to wear a princess dress if they want.
